Reflection
I am content with the outcome of my product, as I believe I accomplished my goal. I was able to create a detailed 3D model of a robotic arm, showcasing each component for clarity. I feel that the product is aesthetically pleasing due to the color scheme and how the separate components come together to create the overall build. I also believe that the model is highly accurate to a real life robotic arm, due to the structure and composition. The 3D model was built with precision and skilled manipulation of the basic shapes to create robotic components
I was successfully able to develop and apply my newly gained knowledge and skills.
Knowledge
I was made aware of the relevancy of robotics in the industrial world and our daily lives. Learning the broad purpose of robotics lead to the expansion of my specialized knowledge in the robotics field. I learned a lot about robots, specifically the different components of robotic arms. Then later proceeding with the design process induced me to learn 3D modeling. Using the 3D design software and finding existing designs developed my understanding of 3D modeling and printing. Hence, I became more knowledgeable about 3D designing and how it is integral in many industries. 3D modeling is used for many purposes in games, movies, art, etc.
As the production process progressed, I learned about and was made aware of the production of robots or other similar goods. This expanded my knowledge about the global context “Scientific and Technical Innovation”, as I experienced the process of innovating a product using scientific and technical skills. I further understood how people use scientific concepts and technical skills to impact human activity, because I was enlightened about the role of the target audience and different processes done to cater to that audience. I became more aware of the applications of these products around me and how crucial they are in our daily lives. For example, I started to inquire more about the mechanisms of certain machines in my house such as a coffee maker, or dish washer.
Skills
In order to create a successful product, I had to use exceptional thinking skills. In the design process, the multiple designs and tests demanded a high level of thinking skills.
3D modeling in Tinkercad required me to use critical thinking skills because modeling the desired shapes is done by conforming the basic preset shapes, accomplished by using the tools given in the software. Critical thinking skills are needed when deciding how to use the tools, and the different ways to re-shape and adapt the presets.
This also required creative thinking skills as there are no definitive ways of using the tools and creating your desired shapes. I had to devise unique methods to combine certain shapes and make them fit in the design.
I used transfer skills during the design process when considering the physics of the design. In some instances, the base of the design was too small, rendering it incapable to support the rest of the arm. In the modeling process, I used mathematical knowledge to calculate the correct measurements for the components, as well as their placement on the 3D plane.
